Well, it's been a long week with post-hurricane
info filling both TV and print media to say nothing
of the ongoing radio coverage. I guess people reacted
somewhat as I would have. Maybe not the extreme
activities in stores and shelters, but I cannot tell
how a major event would affect us. Here on the lip
of the west coast, we only have to contend with forest
fires, volcanic eruptions, pacific storms, earthquakes and
possible tidal waves (tsunami). I have only been in one
event where the Atlantic Ocean was pushed up by
a Spring storm onto our Army base in costal Virginia.
The tide rose about 8 feet and fully flooded our installation.
The troops were called out (me) and we were deployed
to protect the Officers Club with sandbag barriers around
the front doors leading to the waterfront. The winds were
at least 60 mph. (nothing to compare with those of this
week but still it was very difficult to move with those
large bags of sand.
On a happier note, we took a trip to the Oregon State Fair
where the Country Fair had a portion of the site set aside
for them. Many of our friends were there with booths and
they seemed to enjoy the experience. I took some video
with my little digital camera.
