Last Saturday we went to an all-day conference sponsored by The Eugene Bicycling Community and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The meeting started at around nine with introductions and short presentations. Then the R-t-T reps spoke about the Federal Government's plan to fund a number of cities with 50 million dollars to upgrade their bike and walking facilities. Already five cities have received funding to build bike paths and walking trails. The City of Eugene has developed a plan to use the money to build an extensive network of bicycle-friendly improvements including a bike bridge over a series of ponds and possibly another bridge over the Willamette River. Norma walked and I rode my bike. I would say that at least 200 people attended. During the lunch break, a fashion show and musical production entertained us. I believe that we saw the first staging of a "bicycle tango.' Around noon, our congressman Peter DeFazio spoke for a while and brought us up to date on what was going on in "Washington.'
