It was about 5 AM when my wife and I got
up and started to prepare for the long wait
at the County Fairgrounds before the doors
would open and the 06' Eugene Public Library
Book Sale would begin. By 6 AM, it was starting
to get light enough to see and there we were
along with 50 or so early risers and overnight
campers sipping chai tea, eating bagels and
sprouts, oranges and bananas. The good fairies
of bookland took pity on us and let many into
the building's lobby hours before planned
opening at 9 AM. As the time grew short and
people continued to flow into the building to
swell the ranks, booklovers discipline was put
to the test. A few ticks before 9 the doors flew
open and we surged into an array of more than
60,000 books. I made my way to the Science
Fiction area, while norma went to the Slightly
Used dept. The photo, shot from a stage at one
end of the hall may give some idea of the vast
collection of books and lovers.
